Chapter 9

When I walked out of the company building, the afternoon sunlight felt almost blinding.

But I felt incredibly light–so light that even the air seemed crisp and free.

I didn’t waste a second and immediately contacted a moving company.

Watching my belongings pile up inside my small apartment, a wave of happiness rose in my chest.

Tomorrow. 1 would be free.

I met up with Chloe, got a chic new haircut, and went shopping for several new outfits.

1 bought the bag I had promised as a reward for myself.

I wanted to face my new life with a completely new version of myself.

The next day, I did my makeup carefully and arrived at the County Clerk’s Office right on time.

Hunter leaned against the car door and the moment he saw me, his eyes visibly flickered with a mix of surprise and

something else, maybe admiration.

He walked over, trying to sound casual, though his tone still carried that familiar, patronizing edge.

“Penny, you clean up pretty well. If you’d worn a white dress, it would’ve been even better.”

I rolled my eyes. “Like I care what you think

He choked on his words, his expression darkening immediately.

I didn’t look at him again and walked straight into the building

The back of my head hit the cold tile.

My vision went black and my ears were ringing. I struggled to open my eyes–and saw my parents‘ faces, twisted with

rage.

Before I could say a word, my father’s hands clamped around my arms like iron claws, hauling me up from the floor

with sheer violence.

My mother stood beside him, hurling curses nonstop.

“Divorce?! You dare divorce?! You good–for–nothing! Do you know how hard it was to marry you off?! And you still have

the nerve to talk about divorce?! We’ve really been too kind to you!”

“You’ve got some nerve now, sneaking around behind our backs to file paperwork?! Who do you think you are?!”

“You little bitch–wait till we get home, you won’t be able to sit down for a week!”

My father was terrifyingly strong.

No matter how hard I struggled, I couldn’t move an inch, only half–dragged, half–lifted down the steps. When my mother turned to Hunter, her face changed instantly, blooming into a fawning smile.

“Oh, Hunter, I’m so sorry, truly sorry! Our daughter’s lost her mind lately, just spouting nonsense. Don’t worry–we’ll take her home and straighten her out. She’ll never bother you again!”

This divorce? Absolutely not! Not happening!”

She hurried after my father as she spoke.

Together, they shoved me into the backseat of a car parked by the road.

Bang!

The door slammed shut and locked.

I lunged toward the window, pounding the glass desperately.

The County Clerk’s Office receded rapidly from view–shrinking, disappearing.

So close…

I was so close…

Who gave them the right to treat me like this?!
