Chapter 7
That was where the letter ended.
Mom gripped the pages, her hands shaking so violently the paper shivered. The words seared through her like a hot iron
to skin. Each one hit another wound she’d carved into her own life.
For twenty–one years, she’d beaten and humiliated her daughter. And still, in her final hours, Florence had written. “I
love you.”
And what had she given her daughter in return? Beatings. Humiliation. A locked door on Christmas Eve. Death.
“It was me. I killed her. I killed my daughter.”
She was sobbing, barely able to breathe, her face slick with tears and mucus. Her fingers clawed at her own chest, as if
trying to rip the pain out.
“What kind of mother…” Her voice broke. “I’m a monster.”
The officer heard the noise inside and sighed. When she opened the door, Mom was collapsed on the floor.
She didn’t fight as they led her out. She just held onto the letter, its pages soaked through with tears. She held it like a
lifeline, and like a verdict.
At the sentencing hearing, the courtroom fell silent. Mom stood before the judge in an orange jumpsuit, her face hollow and gray. When asked if she had anything to say, she stepped forward.
She’d turned down a private attorney and the public defender.
“Your Honor, my name is Eleanor Miller. I’m Florence Miller’s mother. And I’m the one who killed her.”
“This wasn’t an accident. For twenty–one years, I used being her mother to destroy her, piece by piece.”
She talked about what happened after her husband died. How she’d taken all her rage at the world, her terror of being alone, her fear of people’s pity, and dumped it all on Florence. She talked about the impossible standards she’d set, how she’d turned ordinary expectations into chains.
She admitted using Florence to build her reputation, forcing her into the spotlight to take it, even when she was the one doing it. She admitted she’d liked it, the control, the sick satisfaction she felt when Florence took the punishment
without fighting.
“I hit her. I humiliated her. Not because she deserved it, but because I needed someone to hurt, because I felt powerless. needed the world to see me raise this perfect daughter all on my own, so no one would look at me with pity.
“I treated her like property. Like a trophy I could show off. Like something I could hit when I felt like it. Never lik person. Never like my daughter.”
She turned toward the gallery, looking at the space where I hovered, unseen She hung her head unable to meet the gaze of the empty room.
“Florence, my baby… I’m not human. I’m a monster. I don’t deserve your love. I don’t deserve to call myself your mother.”
“Your Honor, I plead guilty. I’m not asking for mercy. Give me the harshest sentence you can.”
She straightened, her jaw set.
“I admit to everything. I abused my daughter. I killed her.”
I’ll take whatever you give me. It’s what I deserve.”
I hope this can be a warning. Children aren’t props. They’re not trophies. They’re not things you can hurt when you’re angry. And love doesn’t give you the right to hurt them.”
“Please. Your Honor. Send me to prison. Let me spend whatever’s left of my life trying to make up for something I never
could.
No one in the courtroom spoke. When the judge spoke again, it was to deliver her sentence.
“For the charges of Involuntary Manslaughter and Aggravated Child Endangerment, I sentence you to fifteen years in
state prison.”
Mom didn’t react when she heard the sentence. Then she looked to where I hovered and nodded once.
I couldn’t reach her. I couldn’t follow. I could only watch as they led her away.
I felt nothing. No relief. No grief. Just emptiness.
Mom, you finally told the truth, twenty–one years too late.
