Chapter 9
On the day Cassidy fell down the stairs, Ramon had watched through the window as she knelt in the snow, begging for help. Her forehead had swollen red from bowing. He kept the window shut, holding the housekeeper close and murmuring, “Don’t be scared, Britt.”
He’d regretted it immediately, wanting to run out and save Cassidy. But remembering the day Brittany lost her ability to have children, he chose to abandon his own daughter.
Each memory stabbed into Ramon’s heart like a knife.
In that moment, he was consumed by regret. He didn’t care about the photo shoot anymore–he just wanted to find Gabriella, to reclaim the happy, peaceful family he’d lost.
He wanted to apologize, to bring her and the kids home, to make up for everything he’d failed to give them over the past five years.
He ran to the park they used to visit, to her old workplace, to every corner where they’d made memories, but Gabriella was nowhere to be found.
For the first time, Ramon understood what it meant to regret beyond redemption.
Cassidy’s fractures slowly healed. She couldn’t walk for the first three months, but she was already laughing and talking again.

When Ramon finally found me, I was in the kitchen cooking. Terence was outside with Cassidy, blowing bubbles in the yard.
He smiled and tried to approach his adorable son and daughter.
Terence dodged him, and Cassidy burst into tears, terrified.
A sharp pain pierced Ramon’s heart.
He knew–this was his punishment.
When Cassidy was little, she loved curling up in his lap to listen to stories, but he’d pushed her away, blaming his “face blindness,” and coldly asked, “Whose child are you?”

Ramon gave an awkward smile. “You moved–why didn’t you tell
me?”
“You didn’t tell me when you changed wives, either.”
Ramon looked ashamed. “Gabby, I know I was wrong… but back then…”
I smiled. “You truly loved Brittany back then. I know, I understand, and I respect that.
“You’re free to keep loving her.
“I never stopped you before, and I won’t now.”

Just then, Simeon walked in carrying a bottle of soy sauce. “Did Brittany ever tell you Gabby drove her away?
“Did she mention she got bored and left you on her own? That her reputation as a Doctors Without Borders physician was bought with money and sleeping her way up?”
Ramon was left speechless.
Simeon pulled up a video on his phone and tossed it to Ramon. “Take a look at your ‘first love‘–this is how your ‘selfless‘ Doctors Without
Borders hero behaves.”
The video showed Brittany dressed provocatively, draping herself over several foreign men, acting flirtatiously, saying things too vulgar to
repeat.
Her supposed humanitarian title was just a gilded front.
All those honors and fame–she’d traded her body and money for them.
Ramon watched the video, face ashen, trembling all over.
He remembered Brittany’s stories about her time abroad–never about surgeries, always exaggerated and dramatic.
The obsession he’d clung to, the reason he’d hurt Gabriella for five years, had been nothing but a complete lie.
