Yvonne had become the subject of scorn and ridicule in the eyes of those around her. Whispers and sneers followed her like shadows, branding her a delusional social climber.

“Shameless!” they would hiss, their disdain palpable.

Even the Mendoza family had taken measures to ensure her silence, locking away her marriage license, a cruel reminder of the bond she once thought was unbreakable.

In this world, where truth was twisted and loyalty was fleeting, she found herself powerless, a mere pawn in a game she no longer understood.

As she stepped outside the villa, the sunlight struck her like a harsh spotlight, illuminating the cracks in her carefully curated facade. Winthrop’s assistant shielded her from the glaring rays as she slid into the sleek, understated Maybach.

Inside, Winthrop sat with an air of indifference, his legs crossed, engrossed in a pile of documents that seemed to consume him.

“Yvic, I’m busy. Could you step out?” he said, his voice laced with irritation as he barely glanced in her direction.

It stung. After all, he was the architect of her current misery.

A hollow laugh escaped Yvonne’s lips, a sound devoid of any real humor. Exhaustion wrapped around her like a heavy cloak.

“Winthrop, I want a divorce,” she declared, her voice steady yet trembling with the weight of her words.

Finally, he looked up, his gaze landing on her with an unsettling indifference. Instinctively, she tilted her head, attempting to conceal the bruises that marred her skin and the disarray of her appearance.

He set the documents aside, and a frown creased his brow, his voice turning cold and authoritative.

“You ended up like this again? Didn’t I tell you to cover your face when you go out?”

His eyes held nothing but accusation, devoid of any flicker of concern for her well-being.

Yvonne’s heart plummeted, turning to ice at the sight of the man she had once adored.

Was this truly the same Winthrop who had once crouched beside her on the roadside, sharing a plate of pasta and ensuring not a drop of sauce went to waste?

A wave of numbness washed over her, and she repeated, “Winthrop, I said I want a divorce.”

He turned his gaze to the window, his expression inscrutable, before snapping the documents shut with a force that shattered the silence like glass breaking.

“You’re tired, Yvie. Go back and rest. Don’t be so willful,” he commanded, his tone dismissive.

Her hands, still stained with blood, trembled as she fought against the urge to reach out to him. But he merely sighed, withdrawing his hand as if her very presence repulsed him.

Shame flooded her, interpreting his hesitation as disgust.

“Yvie, a warm bath will help. Be good,” he added, his voice softening, but it felt hollow to her ears.

But Yvonne had grown weary of bending to his will. Her fingers brushed against the door handle, a small act of rebellion.

“You’ve changed, Winthrop. You’re nothing like the man I once knew. Now, I don’t even know what you truly want…”

Her words hit a nerve, igniting a spark of fury in his eyes.

“I’ve changed? I’m no longer that man from before? You say that every day—has it ever occurred to you who I’ve been doing all this for? Do you want to go back to that pathetic life we had?”

“Yvonne, look around. I’ve given you everything. And you can’t even handle a few rumors? You still have a lot to learn if you want to be my wife.”

“Fine! Then I won’t be!” The desperation in her voice drained her of strength, leaving her feeling hollow.

But Winthrop remained unmoved, viewing her as nothing more than obstinate and unreasonable.

With a swift motion, he exited the car, slamming the door with a finality that echoed in her heart.

As Yvonne emerged from the vehicle, her gaze landed on Chloe, who stood outside the villa. Winthrop noticed her too, his demeanor shifting as he paused for a moment, the hardness in his eyes softening.

“It’s so cold. What are you doing here?” he asked, his voice suddenly warm.

“Did you and Ms. Welch have a fight? Is it because of today’s interview?” Chloe inquired, concern etching her features.

Then, turning to Yvonne, she added, “I’m sorry, Ms. Welch. The reporter was relentless—I had no choice but to hold Winn’s hand. Please don’t be upset.”

Chloe stepped forward, taking Yvonne’s hand in a gesture of solidarity, her guilt evident.

She was so gentle, so considerate, and in that moment, Yvonne felt a wave of shame wash over her. Instinctively, she withdrew her hand, hurriedly wiping away the bloodstains that clung to her skin.

“It’s not your fault, Ms. Norman. There’s no need to apologize,” Yvonne replied, forcing a smile that felt brittle.

“But Ms. Welch, I truly mean it. Winn is yours. I already feel guilty for taking up his time for so long. If you two fight again because of me, I won’t be able to live with myself.”

Yvonne shook her head, a bitter smile on her lips.

“We won’t fight anymore, Ms. Norman. I’m getting a divorce.”

Chloe’s eyes widened in surprise, a flicker of disbelief crossing her face.

Winthrop, his back turned to Yvonne, spun around abruptly, his fury palpable.

“Yvonne, stop being so unreasonable,” he snarled, his voice laced with venom.

She met his gaze, her throat tightening as she struggled to find her voice. “I’m not being unreasonable. I just want—”

Before she could finish, he interrupted, a mocking smile twisting his lips.

“You’re so ungrateful, Yvonne. Fine. Give me back everything I’ve given you, and I’ll agree to a divorce.”

Yvonne’s heart raced at his words. “What do you mean?”

“Like I said—everything you have belongs to me. Give it all back, and I’ll divorce you. Let’s start with what you’re wearing. Don’t leave a single piece behind.”

His tone was taunting, and as she hesitated, he continued, “What’s wrong? You can’t bear to say goodbye to your fancy things? Have you forgotten you’ve been living off me all this time?”

Chloe, sensing the tension, gripped Yvonne’s hand tightly, glaring at Winthrop in disbelief.

“Enough, Winn. How could you say such harsh things to Yvonne?”

“Leave her be. Let her take off her clothes. She’s the one who wants to leave!”

Yvonne felt her resolve crumble, tears streaming down her cheeks.

The luxury bag she clutched slipped from her fingers, tumbling to the ground. With trembling hands, she began to unbutton her blouse, each movement heavy with despair.

Minutes later, her blouse lay discarded on the cold ground, leaving her shivering in nothing but her underwear, the winter air biting at her exposed skin.

Her fingers trembled as they moved to her bra straps, but Winthrop’s stern voice cut through the moment. “Enough. Keep the underwear—consider it my last act of generosity. Chloe, let’s go.”

He took Chloe’s hand, and without a backward glance, they vanished into the night, leaving Yvonne alone in her vulnerability.

Slowly, she crouched on the ground, tears falling freely, the truth crashing down upon her like a tidal wave—Winthrop loved Chloe.

In that moment, she resolved to grant him his wish, to let him go.
