*Chapter 8**

The man stood before Yvonne, impeccably dressed in a sharply tailored black suit that clung to his form with a precision that spoke of wealth and status. The top two buttons of his crisp white shirt were undone, revealing the elegant, pale line of his neck, and the sharp contours of his collarbones were only partially obscured by the shadows that danced across his skin.

When his piercing gaze landed on her, his lips hardened into a grim line, and his eyes darkened with a barely contained fury that sent a shiver down her spine.

“Yvie? Who did this to you?” His voice was low, a mix of concern and anger that seemed to reverberate in the air between them.

But Yvonne was already drowning in her own despair, the last threads of her consciousness unraveling, fraying beyond any hope of repair.

With a suddenness that startled even her, her body went limp, slumping forward as if the very weight of her sorrow had become too much to bear.

“Yvie!” His voice, filled with alarm, echoed in her ears as the world around her began to fade.

Time slipped away, and moments later, Yvonne awoke from a nightmare, her breaths coming in sharp gasps as she fought to shake off the remnants of her dark dream.

In that haunting vision, she found herself submerged in a tumultuous sea of curses and accusations.

“Homewrecker! Bitch! Shameless gold-digger! Your parents died because of you—you’re a curse!” The words rang out, cruel and relentless, from countless voices that surrounded her, each one more vicious than the last.

Then, in the midst of the chaos, Winthrop emerged, his presence striking and unmistakable. He held Chloe’s hand, their connection palpable and undeniable.

After all the time she had spent waiting, yearning for his defense, he offered her nothing but silence. Instead, he leaned down, kissing Chloe’s hair with a tenderness that felt like a dagger to Yvonne’s heart. He then handed her an invitation, the smile on his face dripping with contempt.

“Yvonne, Chloe is the one I love. We’re getting married. Stop clinging to me.”

His words were like ice, cutting through her with a chilling clarity. “I’ve been lying to you all these years—I never intended to marry you. You have no status, no connections. You’re not worthy of me.”

Yvonne instinctively reached out, her fingers grasping at the air as if trying to hold onto something—anything—that could anchor her in this storm of betrayal.

But the scene before her began to shatter, the world crumbling into fragments around her, leaving her in an abyss of despair.

The ground beneath her seemed to give way, and she fell into a darkness that felt endless.

“No! No!” she cried out, her heart racing as her eyes flew open, her fingers curling into tight fists, a reflexive response to the fear that gripped her.

Just then, a calm, somewhat stern face came into her view, and with it, a sense of relief began to wash over her.

“Who are you?” she managed to ask, her voice trembling.

“You don’t remember me, do you? Yvie? I’m Tom. Thomas Baldwin.”

Yvonne repeated the name softly, letting it roll off her tongue. “Thomas Baldwin… Tom? Is it really you?”

A gentle smile broke across his face, a flicker of reunion joy shining in his deep eyes, but it was tempered by the unmistakable pain he felt at seeing her in such a state.

“Back at the orphanage, I got adopted and had to leave you behind. It’s been over twenty years. How have you been all this—” He trailed off, his slender fingers wrapping around hers as his gaze swept over her swollen eyes and bruised lips, taking in the toll that life had taken on her.

He didn’t need to finish the question; the answer was painfully evident. Even after her release from detention, she looked utterly shattered.

“They said you were detained for theft. Who did this to you?” he asked, concern etched across his features.

As his words sank in, the faces of those female inmates flashed through Yvonne’s mind, each one a reminder of the torment she had endured.

“We’ve got orders from someone in the Mendoza family to ‘take good care of you.’”

The memory sliced through her like a blade, leaving her gasping for breath as unbearable pain wrapped around her heart.

How could Winthrop be so cruel? Was it merely because she had taken that marriage license—the one that bore Chloe’s name?

What she had once treasured as their love now felt like a cruel joke, a mockery of her deepest hopes.

But perhaps it was for the best; now she could see him for who he truly was.

Since they had never been married in any meaningful sense, she was free. Free to walk away at any moment, free to sever the ties that had bound her to him.

She had no desire to be entangled with him ever again.

Yvonne focused intently on Thomas, as if he were her last lifeline in a turbulent sea.

“I crossed someone I shouldn’t have. But it’s over now,” she said, her voice steadying.

Thomas nodded slowly, as if he understood the weight of her words.

“What’s your plan now?” he asked, his tone gentle yet probing.

She clenched her fists, the love that once resided deep within her heart now replaced by a cold, piercing hatred.

“I want to clear my name. I’ve endured too much injustice, and I need to make things right for myself.”

“Tom, can you help me? I’ll do anything you ask in return. I swear it.”

Seeing the fierce determination in her eyes, Thomas felt a suffocating ache in his chest.

He remembered her as the soft-hearted girl from the orphanage—even when she was bullied, she had repaid malice with kindness, never holding a grudge against those who wronged her.

What had she endured to become so desperate, so filled with resentment?

She must have suffered deeply to have transformed into this version of herself.

He nodded, resolve hardening within him.

“I’ve built up some resources over the years. I believe I can help you. And don’t talk about repaying me.”

“You saved me from that fire and pushed me forward when my adoptive parents came looking for a child. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be here today. I’m glad to be of help.”

Meanwhile, Winthrop was busy maintaining his public persona, traveling almost nonstop with Chloe, trying to keep up with the demands of their social engagements.

Utterly exhausted, he finally pushed through to an important investor meeting, where his professionalism and demeanor were met with approval. Chloe, who was friends with the investor’s daughter, had helped smooth over any potential bumps in the conversation.

After his plane touched down, he pinched the bridge of his nose, fatigue weighing heavily on him, and turned his phone back on.

Notifications flooded in—several messages, and at the very bottom, a missed call from Yvonne. He had been in negotiations and hadn’t been able to answer.

There was also a call from an unknown number—vaguely, he recalled it was from some police officer.

With Chloe and the investor present, he had brushed it off, ending the call quickly, too swamped to remember the details.

Frowning, he dialed Yvonne’s number, a sense of unease creeping into his mind.
