Chapter 7

Three days after Mara announced she’d “taken over” NovaDx-before the injunction could fully unwind the fraudulent transfer-she held a prest

reception at the Glasshouse downtown.

She had chosen the perfect stage: floor-to-ceiling windows, glittering skyline views, white flowers on every table like a wedding that never should have been. A step-and-repeat wall covered in the NovaDx logo, as if she had bled for every line of code.

I stood in the shadows of the back hallway, watching through the crack in the door. My ribs still ached with every breath, my wrist brace hidden

under my sleeve, but the pain was nothing compared to the storm raging inside me.

Mara stood at the center of it all, glowing in an ivory designer suit, diamond tennis bracelet flashing with every graceful gesture. Reporters

swarmed her like moths to a flame.

“Ms. Vance, what’s your plan for NovaDx moving forward?”

Mara smiled-soft, humble, perfectly rehearsed. “I only want to protect what my sister built,” she said, voice dripping with false sincerity “Ella has been under a great deal of stress lately. Until she’s well enough to return, I’ll help steady the company…”

My hands curled into fists so tight my nails bit into my palms. Protect. The word tasted like poison. She had stolen my company and wrapped it in

the language of sisterly love.

Another reporter asked about the allegations.

Mara lowered her eyes, letting them glisten on cue. “Ella is still my sister. She’s young. She made mistakes. I don’t want to destroy her. I just hope

she gets the help she needs.”

The murmurs rose: So gracious. What a class act.

My stomach churned with bitter, bone-deep recognition. In this life and the last, Mara had never been gracious-she had simply perfected the performance. While I lay in a hospital bed with bruises shaped like someone’s fingerprints, she was here collecting sympathy and my life’s work. Across the room, Caleb watched her with soft, proud eyes, as if she were finally receiving the crown she deserved. Declan stood a few feet away. expression unreadable, but his gaze kept drifting back to Mara. Even now, after everything, he couldn’t stop himself.

My parents sat in the front row. Mother’s eyes were wet with pride as she whispered to Father, who nodded with open admiration-the kind of look

I had never once received.

No one mentioned my name except to pity Mara for “surviving” me.

Apparently the world ran smoother when I simply disappeared.

I had seen enough.

The cold fury that had simmered for weeks crystallized into something sharp, unbreakable, and terrifyingly calm. My heart hammered against my bruised ribs, but my hands were steady. I pushed open the ballroom doors and walked in.

The first heads turned. Then more. The room seemed to freeze mid-breath before every camera swung toward me like a tidal wave.

Mara’s smile froze, champagne flute halfway to her lips.

Caleb straightened, charm vanishing.

Declan’s mask cracked for a split second.

I walked straight to the center of the room, heels clicking like gunshots on the marble The silence was deafening

Then I clapped twice

The massive screen behind Mara went black. A second later, the NovaDx promo vanished replaced by crystal-clear time-stamped mages

Mara stepping into a private elevator with a man who wasn’t Caleb

Mara kissing him passionately in a dimly lit hallway

Mara leaving a penthouse at dawn in the same dress from the charity gala the night before.

A collective gasp ripped through the room. Cameras exploded like lightning.

Then came the financial records-wire transfers, hotel bookings, a shell account. Finally, his face appeared on screen. Julian Vance Mamed

Powerful. Not Caleb.

The ballroom fell deathly silent for three full seconds.

Then it erupted.

Reporters shouted, phones rose, flashes blinded. Mara’s face drained of all color. The champagne flute slipped from her fingers and shattered at her feet, glass spraying across her white heels. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out. For the first time in two lifetimes, she had no script, no tears, no performance left.

I stood beneath the blazing screen and looked straight at her. My chest burned with a cold, final satisfaction-not joy, but the quiet, devastating weight of justice finally served.

“Mara,” I said, my voice clear and steady through every microphone, cutting through the chaos. “You said you were here to protect my company”

Her lips trembled violently. A strangled, broken sound escaped her throat.

I glanced at the frozen images on the screen, then back at her. “Maybe you should start by protecting your own story.”

The room descended into pure pandemonium. But in that moment, all I felt was clarity-cold, sharp, and liberating. The girl who once cried in corners was gone. This time, I was the one who walked away unbroken.
