**Chapter 2**

With a heavy heart, I gathered the remnants of my life, packing up the belongings that had once filled the corners of what I had called home. Each item I placed in the box felt like a piece of my identity being stripped away, but I knew it was necessary. I had to leave behind the memories that haunted me like ghosts in the night.

I returned to my pre-marital condo, a space that felt both familiar and foreign. It was smaller than his grand mansion, but it wrapped around me like a comforting blanket, offering a sense of tranquility I hadn’t experienced in what felt like an eternity. The walls whispered secrets of my past, and for the first time in ages, I found solace in their embrace.

In the days that followed, I met with a lawyer to discuss the intricate details of my impending divorce. She was meticulous, outlining various strategies to navigate this tumultuous journey with as little turbulence as possible. I listened intently, my heart heavy with the weight of what was to come.

After two days of solitude, I finally allowed myself to rest. But on the third day, my brief reprieve was shattered by a call from Thomas that jolted me awake around noon.

“Riley, where the hell did you go? Do you think this whole playing hard to get thing is funny?” His voice was a mixture of anger and incredulity, a tone I had grown all too familiar with.

“Get your ass back here right now. I even bought you a gift.”

His words dripped with the same old accusations, the same blame-shifting that had become our twisted dance. He never paused to consider my feelings, never made an effort to step into my shoes and see the world through my eyes.

Marriage was meant to be a partnership, a bond forged in love and respect, but in his eyes, I was a mere shadow, a figment of his imagination that no longer held any significance.

I recalled a time when I was so consumed by my work that I collapsed at the office. In that moment of vulnerability, I had hoped he would rush to my side, but instead, he was more concerned about the stray cat Peyton had taken in. He had walked past me, unconscious on the floor, and driven over 250 miles just to be with her.

Ironically, it was a coworker, someone with whom I had a contentious relationship, who had shown genuine concern. They called an ambulance and stayed by my side, ensuring I got the help I needed. When I finally came to, the first face I saw was that of my supposed rival, someone who had proven to be more of a friend in my time of need than my husband ever had.

And Thomas? He had completely ignored my plight, too wrapped up in his own world to spare me a single word of concern. Not even a simple “Are you okay?”

I was furious. I confronted him, asking if I meant anything to him at all. His response mirrored the anger he had just expressed over the phone—furious and accusatory.

“Are you seriously going to make a scene over something so trivial? Didn’t you get the worker’s comp money already? If you can’t handle it, then let’s just get a divorce.”

He wielded the threat of divorce like a weapon, and I was too afraid to fight back. Back then, my love for him was all-consuming; the thought of losing him felt like losing a part of myself.

But the memories of the moments he shared with Peyton replayed in my mind like a haunting melody, each note striking a chord of pain within me. I began to deceive myself, convincing myself that Thomas was telling the truth, that he and Peyton were merely friends, that everything was innocent, that he still loved me.

I had created a world of lies to shield myself from the truth, allowing him to remain on his pedestal while I played the role of a clueless fool. But now, the veil had been lifted.

I had made plans to join some coworkers for dinner, and as we made our way to the restaurant in small groups, I felt a flicker of hope. Perhaps this evening could help me regain some semblance of normalcy.

As I stepped out of the elevator with my colleagues, my heart sank. There he was, Thomas, standing in the lobby, his presence commanding and unyielding. Under the dazzling light of the lobby’s crystal chandelier, he looked nothing short of magnificent in a bespoke suit, his cold eyes piercing through the crowd until they locked onto mine.

In the past, such a sight would have sent my heart racing, filling me with a sense of pride to be married to such a striking man. But now, my heart felt like stone. Instead of admiration, I felt a wave of indifference wash over me.

His intense gaze held no warmth, only a chilling sense of entitlement, as if I owed him something monumental. I realized then that this was how he had always looked at me—cold, unfeeling, and utterly indifferent. I had been blinded by love, unwilling to acknowledge the truth that had been right in front of me.

With newfound determination, I quickened my pace, pulling my coworker along as the sound of Thomas’s high heels echoed ominously behind me.

Suddenly, I felt his hand grip my arm, halting my escape.

“You promised me you’d come to the party tonight,” he said, his voice dripping with arrogance.

I froze, the weight of my promise crashing down on me. I had indeed made that promise, but now I felt trapped.

As I opened my mouth to refuse, my lawyer’s words echoed in my mind—a warning against provoking him. He was currently ignoring the divorce papers, and I knew that if I wanted this process to unfold smoothly, I had to tread carefully. If he decided to retaliate out of spite, it would only complicate matters further.

“Fine,” I finally relented, my voice barely above a whisper.

I followed him to his car, my heart heavy with resignation. As the scenery blurred past my window, I felt a sudden urge to break the silence. “What made you decide to wear this?” I asked, my curiosity piqued despite my anger.

“It’s Peyton’s birthday today. She likes it,” he replied curtly, his voice losing its earlier bravado.

An uncomfortable silence settled between us, and I could sense his discomfort as he glanced at me, only to find me lost in thought, staring out the window.

After what felt like an eternity, he finally added, “Don’t overthink it. I just thought it was formal enough for the occasion.”

“Mm.” I shrugged, unwilling to engage further. The truth was, this dark brown bespoke suit was a gift I had given him, yet he had never worn it for me. He had never even tried it on in my presence.

But now, it was clear: the suit had been chosen for Peyton’s birthday, a gesture of affection that I would never receive.

He had no regard for me, only feeding me hollow excuses to cover the truth. He cared for Peyton, and here he was, donning my gift to impress someone else. If he had remembered that the suit came from me, he probably would have been repulsed at the thought of wearing it.

He was a brilliant, blazing sun, yet he refused to cast his light upon me. In that moment, the stark contrast between being loved and unloved became painfully clear, etching itself into my heart.
