Chapter 2
Fortunately, there were two retired doctors in the neighborhood group, and they arrived quickly.
They carefully lifted Cassidy into the hallway and examined her for a moment, their faces growing grave. “Her left tibia is fractured, and her right arm is broken.
“There’s also a possibility of intracranial bleeding–she needs surgery as soon as possible.”
“But this blizzard…”

I was so frantic I dropped to my knees, thanking them again and again, tears and snot running down my face in a pitiful mess.
There was a world–class orthopedic surgeon in my own home, and yet Cassidy’s life depended on the kindness of strangers.
Before long, an ambulance from the city hospital arrived. With the neighbors‘ help, we rushed Cassidy to the hospital.
After she was wheeled into the operating room, a young doctor looked at me, hesitated, then asked quietly, “Are you Dr. Riley’s wife?”
I was caught off guard but nodded. “How did you know?”

“Dr. Riley just won an international orthopedic award!”
The young doctor pulled out his phone to show me. “He posted a photo on Instagram, holding a little boy–must be your son, right? I remember thinking Dr. Riley had it all—an amazing career and a perfect family.
“By the way, isn’t Dr. Riley a top expert in fractures? I’d imagine you have professional surgical equipment at home. Why isn’t he operating on his own daughter?”
I leaned against the cold hospital wall, my fingernails digging into my palm.
My dad was a giant in the country’s orthopedic field. Ramon was his most prized and beloved student.
This book had been added on your bookshelf.
The first time I met Ramon was my dad’s study, he was hunched over a complicated X–ray, sunlight from the blinds tracing the sharp, determined lines of his face.
My dad pointed to him, his eyes full of pride. “Gabby, this is your senior, Ramon. From now on, he’s part of our family.”
In that moment, I admitted, I fell for him.
But I knew Ramon’s heart was haunted by a love he could never let go of, so I kept my distance, never daring to intrude.
Later, when tragedy struck Ramon’s family and Brittany left him to go abroad, I begged my dad to help him.
After that, Ramon stopped keeping me at arm’s length. We grew closer

and closer.
We honored my dad’s last wish and got married. Just a month after the wedding, Ramon was diagnosed with traumatic prosopagnosia.
He’d pound his head in frustration, saying he couldn’t even recognize faces–how could he possibly operate?
I’d hold him, comfort him, and tell him it was okay, that I’d support our family.
After that, he never touched a scalpel again.
But the photos on that young doctor’s phone didn’t lie.
There was Ramon, in a sharp suit, holding the orthopedic award, grinning from ear to ear.
Standing next to him was Brittany, wearing a white coat, leaning against Ramon’s side. They looked like the perfect couple–talented, beautiful, dazzling together.
So he’d never left the operating room. He’d never given up his career.
He’d only given up on me, and on our children.
The doors to the OR swung open. The lead surgeon rushed over to me.
“Your daughter’s blood type is rare–she needs a transfusion. The hospital blood bank is running low. Do you have her medical report? It‘ you do, we can expedite a blood match through the emergency channel.”

My mind went blank. “It’s at home–I’ll go get it right now.”
I stumbled out of the hospital, but just as I reached the entrance to the surgical wing, a stretcher passed right by me.
And I saw the face I knew better than my own.
It was Brittany.
