Chapter 4
Just then, a breaking news alert flashed across the hospital lobby screen. “Doctors Without Borders physician Brittany Floyd suffers serious injuries in a car accident while returning to the country- currently in critical condition! Orthopedic expert Ramon Riley rushes to the scene; the golden couple reunited!”
I saw clearly which direction Ramon was heading–he wasn’t going to Cassidy’s operating room.
So Ramon had come to the hospital, but not to save Cassidy. He was here for Brittany.
I pushed through the wall of reporters crowding around, fighting my way to Ramon and grabbing his sleeve with all my strength.
“Ramon, Cassie is in critical condition. The doctors said only you can perform this surgery. I’m begging you—please save her, save our daughter.”
Ramon turned, his eyes cold as ice as he looked at me.
“Ma’am, please don’t cause a scene here and interfere with the
surgery.”
I stood there, frozen to the core, my breath sharp with cold.
So this is what it means not to love–so cruel, so merciless.

He could ignore his own daughter’s life–and–death struggle, while his heart broke for another woman’s safety.
Şuddenly, I laughed, my heart sinking to ashes.
“Ramon, I’m begging you, just save Cassie first.
“I’ll agree to a divorce. I’ll let you and Brittany be together.”
Ramon hesitated, his eyes flickering with emotion.
“Gabby, I’m not…”
Seeing the doubt in his eyes, a flicker of hope rose in me.
Was he going to save Cassidy?
But from inside the operating room, Brittany suddenly called out, “Ray, my leg hurts so much…”
Ramon’s gaze darkened, then hardened again.
“I’m sorry, ma’am. I don’t know you. If you need surgery, please contact the hospital and wait for your turn. I’m busy saving lives right now-
excuse me.”
He pried my hand off his arm and strode into Brittany’s operating
room.
I stumbled, falling to the floor.
My eyes reddened as I stared after Ramon’s retreating back, and a bitter laugh escaped me.

I’d never done anything to hurt Brittany, yet Ramon believed her every word and blamed me for everything.
Because he hated me, he didn’t care if Terence and Cassidy lived or
died.
Because he hated me, he pretended to be sick and tormented me for five whole years.
Because he hated me, he hated my children too—watching them teeter between life and death, utterly unmoved.
I laughed until tears streamed down my face.
I pulled out my phone and dialed a number I hadn’t called in years.
I held Terence close as I helped load Cassidy onto the ambulance for transfer.
My phone buzzed–it was a message from Ramon.
“Where are you? I heard Cassie’s sick. Which operating room is she in? I’ll go do the surgery right away!”
I smiled and sent back a reply.
“Ramon, pretending to be sick must be exhausting. Congratulations, you won’t have to anymore. Get ready for the divorce papers.”
Then I blocked his number and turned off my phone.
