**When Broken Hearts Learn To Breathe Again by Daren S. Cole**
In the corridors of her past, Yvonne had been a steadfast warrior, weathering storms for what she had once believed was a love as rare and precious as a diamond. She had sacrificed her dignity and reputation on the altar of that love, convinced that it was worth every ounce of pain. But now, as the bitter winds of reality howled around her, she found herself questioning the very foundation of her sacrifices. Winthrop no longer loved her; so why should she continue to bear the burden of her choices?
The taxi came to a halt, jolting her from her spiraling thoughts. As she swung the door open, her gaze collided with Winthrop’s, and in that fleeting moment, the world around her faded. She noticed the weariness etched across her features, a reflection of the emotional turmoil she had been enduring.
In a voice that barely rose above a whisper, he said, “I’ll deal with the photos.”
Yvonne’s laughter escaped her lips, a bitter sound that echoed in the stillness. His idea of “dealing with it” was nothing more than a feeble attempt to suppress the trending discussions, allowing time to dull the sharp edges of people’s memories.
But what about her?
She would forever be branded as the shameless home-wrecker, a title that would cling to her like a shroud. The mockery and slander would linger, piercing her heart like arrows, leaving scars that would never fully heal.
“If all you plan to do is remove the trending topics, then forget it. I’ll explain to everyone myself that I’m not a shameless woman. I will clear my name.”
The moment those words left her mouth, Winthrop stepped forward, his hand gripping her wrist with a force that sent a chill down her spine. The warmth in his eyes evaporated, replaced by a cold, hard ruthlessness that left her breathless.
“Yvonne, we can’t go public with our relationship right now. Can’t you be a little more understanding? Stop throwing a tantrum!”
“A tantrum? Even now, you still think I’m just being unreasonable and throwing a tantrum?” She glared at him, disbelief and bitterness swirling in her chest.
The harsh reality hit her like a slap—he had never truly cared about her pain or despair. All the sacrifices she had made, the tears she had shed, meant nothing in the eyes of the imperious Mr. Mendoza.
The bandaged wound on her scalp began to throb with a dull ache, sending tremors through her body.
Frowning, Winthrop’s voice cut through the tension like a knife. “That’s not the point. What matters is that you must wait.”
Before she could respond, several bodyguards surged forward, seizing her arms and forcing her into the car.
She fought against their grip, a desperate struggle against the swamp of despair that threatened to pull her under. But her strength was no match for the sheer bulk of the men who overpowered her.
An hour later, she found herself unceremoniously tossed onto the bed, the door slamming shut behind Winthrop as he locked it with a finality that echoed in her heart.
When she attempted to flee, he caught her effortlessly, tossing her back onto the mattress with a force that left her gasping. His eyes glinted with a mix of desire and something darker as he pinned her beneath him, his lips crashing against hers with an urgency that sent shivers through her body.
She bit down hard, the metallic taste of blood flooding her mouth as he gasped in pain, but he did not retreat. Instead, a cold laugh escaped him, chilling her to the bone.
“Yvie, you’ve always been so well-behaved. What’s gotten into you lately? Don’t push me.”
Yvonne met his icy gaze, her heart racing as her nose tingled with the threat of tears. But she would not give him the satisfaction of seeing her cry; she refused to show any sign of weakness.
“Winthrop, I’ve had enough, OK? I don’t want to play the part of your hidden wife anymore.”
He held her gaze, searching for something in her tear-filled eyes, before letting out another mocking laugh. “After everything I’ve given you? It’s too late, Yvonne. You don’t get to call the shots anymore.”
His jaw tightened, and he lowered his head, silencing her protests with passionate, possessive kisses that left no room for argument.
Then, in a swift motion, he flipped her over, taking her with a ferocity that stole her breath away, leaving her gasping for air in the aftermath of their chaotic encounter.
When the storm of emotions finally subsided, he emerged from the bathroom, donning his suit with an air of detachment that was almost jarring. It was as if the frantic man who had just claimed her was nothing more than a figment of her imagination.
“Be good and wait. I don’t care whether you want to or not. Understood?”
With that, he exited, slamming the door behind him with a force that reverberated through the room.
Silence enveloped her, a heavy blanket that pressed down on her chest. Yvonne struggled to gather herself, wincing as she attempted to clean her bruised body. But then, two hushed voices outside her door caught her attention.
“Mr. Mendoza, are we really not going to intervene in Ms. Welch’s situation?”
Winthrop’s voice drifted through the door, casual and dismissive as he flicked the ash off his cigarette.
“Pay no attention to it. The more her reputation is ruined, the better. Spread those photos widely. Make sure they top the trending list again.”
“But… Isn’t this unfair to Ms. Welch? Because of the rumors, she’s suffered so much over the past five years…”
After a brief silence, Yvonne heard Winthrop’s resigned sigh.
“This is the only way to protect her completely. Say no more. Do as I say.”
In that moment, the weight of realization crashed down on her—those years of misunderstanding, mockery, and insult were all orchestrated by Winthrop himself.
Leaning against the wall for support, her chest tightened with a painful ache as she struggled to breathe. She had never imagined that, in his misguided attempt to shield Chloe, Winthrop would use her as a mere pawn, crafting rumors to pave the way for someone else while trampling on her spirit.
All the beautiful memories they had forged in their youth shattered like glass within her heart.
With a whisper that trembled on her lips, she muttered, “How heartless you are, Winthrop…”
